IDP allows engineers to plan the drilling path of new oil wells inside an existing mature oilfield using a CAVE for direct 3D perception. The existing oil wells are represented with their maximum incertitude ensuring no overlap could occur in real life if the new well is positioned outside of the existing one.

To manipulate the position of the new well, users use a wand. The press of a button glues the well section to the position of the wand, while the press of another button glues the well section to the orientation of the wand. This allow better precision by decoupling both movements.
